Free Legal Advice Surgery from Raleys Solicitors

Raleys Solicitors are delighted to offer a free legal surgery for Goldthorpe residents.

Lawyers from Raleys Solicitors will be available to advise residents on their legal queries including how to proceed in the event of an accident at home, at work or on the road, as well as how to make a will or start a compensation claim following an occupational illness. The initial consultation will be completely free of charge.

The next advice session will take place at the Dearne Enterprise Centre, Barnburgh Lane, Goldthorpe on Friday 4th June between 10am and 2pm. There is no charge for initial consultations and as this is a drop-in session there is no need to make an appointment.

Raleys Solicitors are working with the Yorkshire area NUM to offer regular one to one advice sessions to Yorkshire’s mining communities. Past and present miners, their friends, family and neighbours are all very welcome.

“These surgeries are open to all residents of the Goldthorpe community, ” said Debra Allen of Raleys Solicitors, who will be co-ordinating the sessions. “You don’t have to be an ex-miner or union member to come and speak to us. The surgeries have proved really popular and are a great opportunity for people to come along and seek advice on any kind of legal matter.”

Local NUM members can contact Joe Gaskill on 01709 881 181 for more information about the surgeries. For non-union enquiries, contact Debra Allen on 01226 603 207

Can You Make an Accident Claim for Your Pavement Trip?

If you’ve ever fallen over in public you’ll know that despite what passers by might think, it’s actually no laughing matter. If you’ve ever been injured in such a fall or trip then you’ll understand the frustration at having been the victim of an injury because of tripping hazards that shouldn’t have been there.

TV adverts and magazines are always mentioning the possibility of accident claims following trips and falls in public, but there does remain some apprehension amongst the injured parties who simply aren’t sure whether or not they’re entitled to claim.

Simply put, if you’ve been injured in a trip or fall in public then you probably have a case to make a claim. Here are our simple guidelines.

Local authorities have a legal duty to maintain their roads and pavements, this includes repairing potholes, raised or loose paving stones or any other defect. If you are injured by any hazard such as these then you can claim.

However, the local authority will be free from responsibility if they can demonstrate that they have a working system of inspection and repair and if they can successfully argue that the defect happened between inspections.

Remember then that if you wish to make a claim for an  injury you have suffered as a result of a trip or fall on a defective surface, you should contact an accident claim solicitor as soon as possible because as soon as the defect is repaired then the evidence for your case is lost.

If you choose to contact us we will visit the site of the accident right away to inspect it, identify the landowner so that the claim can be made against the right person or organisation, obtain detailed medical reports about the injury you received from the doctor or hospital who treated you at the time, fight for justice for you and finally negotiate compensation so that you can move on with your life.

Winter Worries For Local Councils

Local councils have been inundated with personal injury claims and compensation cases due to the poor winter weather. The huge amounts of ice and snow meant that councils were leaving many pavements un-gritted in an effort to make the main roads safe whilst the roads have been left with massive potholes in after they have thawed. If you want to know more about how the winter weather has led to an increase in accident claims, read my article at ezine articles.

Firm news: Raleys' Miners Bike Ride

group-bike-ride

Last year, Don Cook, 50 of Brayton, near Selby died when part of the roof at the Kellingley colliery collapsed on top of him.  In memory of this fine man and the many other miners who have died at the colliery, Raleys Solicitors have taken part in a 45-mile bike ride which started and finished at the mine.

The aim of the bike ride was to raise money for the creation of a statue of a miner that could be placed at the entrance of the shaft as a reminder of all those people who died at the mine. And we are glad to report to you that it was a success. Four members of the Raleys office in Barnsley took part in the ride and between them they raised nearly £2,000. Colin Cooke, John Woodhouse, Steve Addy and Matthew Brown were joined by three miners; Billy Gow, Tim Sharpe and Dave Bell as well as the colliery’s deputy Darryl Jones and the NUM secretary at Kellingley, Keith Poulson.

Although the ride was a tough one, everyone involved has said that each painful mile was worth it.
